Selecting the right PCM supplier for cold-chain

  • Match the phase-change temperature to the payload's regulated range (e.g. 2–8 °C for pharma, 15–25 °C for controlled ambient) — a mismatch of even a few degrees collapses hold time.
  • Prioritize suppliers who publish enthalpy (J/g) and cycle-life data from independent DSC testing, not marketing claims.
  • Confirm regulatory documentation: food-contact (FDA/EU 10/2011), REACH, non-toxicity, and — for pharma — GMP-compatible manufacturing.
  • Ask for validated hold-time simulations against your specific lane profile (dwell, ambient, and abuse) before committing to tooling.
  • Evaluate lifecycle and reusability — reusable PCM panels typically pay back inside a single season versus single-use gel-and-foam.
